JOB SUMMARY

To assure surfaces of aircraft are smooth and prepared for primer and finish paint application; apply finishes to a variety of parts, assemblies and/or completed aircraft. Learn the correct procedures to apply prime and finish coat to a variety of aircraft.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Works in accordance with general safety procedures to avoid accidents. Maintains protective safety equipment such as goggles, masks and respirators in proper working order which may include cleaning and replacing filters.
  • Performs surface preparation of aircraft prior to painting. Marks areas to be filled. Mixes hardener and filler. Applies hardener and filler to unfinished areas needing smoothing and contouring. Visually checks surface for discrepancies in paint to assure conformity to desired specifications and learns to perform complicated rework.
  • Uses conventional air and HVLP spray painting equipment and is familiar with airless spray-painting equipment. Uses simple hand tools and some measuring equipment (i.e. a Zahn cup). Ascertains whether paint spraying equipment is in good operating order before and after spray painting assignments.
  • Spray primer, paint filler and protective paint on prepared surfaces.
  • Prepares plastic, fiberglass, or composite parts of aircraft using filler to provide uniform surface for paint adhesion. Uses painting equipment including brushes and spray guns to perform minor rework, touchup, priming, finish painting of partial aircraft when not otherwise engaged in paint preparation duties.
  • Prepares painted surfaces. Spray primers or various paint finishes to parts, assemblies, or completed aircraft. Uses some judgment in obtaining desired finish. May work under the guidance and instruction of Painters and SOJT.
  • Stripping aircraft or aircraft parts applies chemical paint removers.
  • Roughs and finishes aircraft parts using various types of sandpaper and hand sanding machines to provide surface for paint adhesion and smooth appearance.
  • Other duties – applying alodine, washing aircraft or sealing a variety of components.
  • Works from oral and written instructions and established procedures and specifications.
  • Professionally applies paint or primer to surface maintaining finish requirements acceptable to shop supervision and quality control.
  • Responsible for the quality of own work.
  • Works from oral and written instructions and established procedures and specifications.
  • General supervision needed in order the complete tasks plus additional on the job training required.
  • Needs assistance to find solutions in order to solve problems.
  • Listens to concerns and responds appropriately based on feedback given through the learning curve.
  • Will learn to identify the need for improvements and be open to new ideas.
  • No instructions needed on routine work and general instructions given on new lines of work or special assignments.
  • Identify need for improvements and provides recommendations for safety improvements.
  • Daily tasks are completed without supervision.
  • Training others and assisting in required certifications and qualification for team.
  • Trained beyond skills needed in immediate area.
  • A self-starter and takes the lead on important projects to completion.
  • Leads safety or quality improvements.
  • Responsible for leading, guiding, and directing other employees on paint team member needs
  • Responsible for training new and current paint specialist team members on processes and procedures
Job Requirements:

EDUCATION

Must have a high school diploma, an equivalent certificate, or a bronze level WorkKeys certification.

EXPERIENCE

Requires a minimum of 2 years aircraft spray painting or equivalent experience or manufacturing spray painting experience. Must include experience painting overall topcoat on completed aircraft

QUALIFICATIONS
