Job overview and responsibilities

The Director of Terminal A at the Newark airport will play the pivotal role of creating and delivering a culture of success for this fast-growing terminal. This includes safety first, a highly engaged workforce, superior service delivery, operational performance, and financial goals. Collaboration with station leadership to develop an inclusive culture and engaged workforce comprised of management, frontline employees, and the union. Responsible for delivering measurable results through high impact leadership, innovation, coaching and rapid execution in a dynamic, fast paced environment. Success will require collaboration with all divisions across the hub (Flight Ops, Inflight, Tech Ops, etc.), airport authorities and agencies. The Director will also be the primary UA contact for all government agencies, Terminal A business partners and UA union leadership.

  • Operations Leadership
    • Ensure the safe and successful creation and execution of all goals and standards for Terminal A success
    • Monitor performance against plans and initiate immediate corrective action plans to improve results
  • Employee engagement
    • Inspire and motivate management and frontline employees to perform at the highest level
    • Identify and resolve employee concerns, and foster a culture of recognition, support, coaching and feedback
  • Performance management of direct and indirect employees - ability to select, assess, coach, and develop supervisors and managers
  • Equipment and Facility support
    • Lead facilities and equipment projects for Terminal A
  • Key liaison and maintain strong working relationship with Munich, Port Authority, OAL, Business Partners, FAA, TSA, and Customs Border Patrol

Qualifications

What’s needed to succeed (Minimum Qualifications):

  • Bachelors degree or related work experience
  • 10+ years airline and operations experience
  • 5+ years of management experience
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
  • Proficient in data analysis fundamental and basic statistics
  • Ability to create and execute a vision; ability to think strategically and to translate strategies into realistic action plans
  • Experience organizing complex and/or ambiguous challenges into structured deliverable and executing to completion
  • Executive presence and strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to comfortably and confidently communicate with employee at all levels
  • Ability to effectively collaborate with and influence peers and stakeholders across all divisions within the hub and the Corp Support Center
  • Represent the company and United brand externally
  • Emotional intelligence (EQ)
  • Change management
  • Dedicated support to a 24/7/365 operation and maintaining composure under pressure
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship
  • Successful completion of interview required to meet job qualification
  • Reliable, punctual attendance is an essential function of the position
  • This role is based in Newark and follows a 100 onsite work schedule

  • Lean Six Sigma certifications
  • Project Management certifications
  • Expertise leading hourly and unionized employees, as well as overseeing large, diverse teams of over 500 members
  • Extensive knowledge of resource planning and labor finance
  • Experience supporting strategic initiatives through robust business case development

The base pay range for this role is $155,895.00 to $212,410.00.
The base salary range/hourly rate listed is dependent on job-related, non-discriminatory factors such as experience, education, and skills. This position is also eligible for bonus and/or long-term incentive compensation awards.
