Job Description:

POSITION SUMMARY:

This position is responsible for maintaining and managing the Companys Dangerous Good Program (DG). Under minimal supervision, this position provides safe, orderly, and expeditious movement of Dangerous Goods. This position will carry out responsibilities in accordance with the Companys policies and all applicable regulations pertaining to DG transportation. Provides initial and recurrent training on cargo service job duties, company and departmental policies, safety in warehouse and ramp operations, and the proper operation of all relevant ground service equipment. This is a non-supervisory role.

Duties:

  • Maintain DG program currency through the Federal Register and other regulatory publications (local, state, and federal levels)
  • Provide classroom (instructor-led), on-the-job and virtual training (when applicable) to cargo service employees on basic job duties, company and departmental policies, safety, and the operation of all relevant ground service equipment
  • Assist with keeping company and departmental policies and manuals updated in accordance with any changes made to operations
  • Remain current on FAA, OSHA, and DOT regulations pertinent to cargo service operations
  • Coordinates with other departments, for training scheduling, training record keeping and other arrangements necessary for training completion.
  • Conduct routine audits of employee performance and adherence to company policies and procedures
  • Communicates directly with local, state, and federal personnel orally and/or in written format
  • Communicates with customers, contractors, and internal team members to ensure safe, reliable transportation of DG
  • Maintains and develops the Companys FAA approved Dangerous Goods Program manual
  • Compliantly develop, implement, and maintain the DG program for the Company
  • Ensures the Companys workforce is properly trained to their job function level
  • Develops training materials and training aids for the workforce to ensure regulatory compliance
  • Tracks, orders, and maintains DG publications, supplies and equipment
  • Assists in reporting DG incidents to DOT
  • Audits DG documentation (e.g. NOTOC, shippers declarations, etc.)
    • Daily NOTOC audit
    • Daily 90-day file NOTOC audit
    • Daily Shippers declaration audit (to include waste manifest)
    • Weekly 90-day file NOTOC report to Director of Safety
    • Monthly NOTOC/90-day/shippers declaration audit summary
    • Quarterly audit summaries
  • Regular attendance is required, and other duties as assigned

Position Qualifications and Requirements:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the education, experience, knowledge, skill and/or ability required.

Education:

  • High school diploma or General Education Degree (GED)

Experience:

  • One-year related cargo and training experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience required

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of DG, EPA and OSHA regulations, 49CFR, ICAO, IATA and ordinances governing the transportation of DG and complexities affecting regulatory compliance
  • Ability to review and understand complex technical documents
  • Ability to complete all basic and re-currency training for DG requirements
  • Ability to identify potential hazards in the handling and storage of DG/hazardous material and report accordingly
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and makes decisions in logical and rational manner
  • Must be a team player
  • Understand OSHA regulations as well as Company policies and department procedures
  • Ability to learn and understand dangerous goods transportation requirements
  • Strong attention to detail skills
  • Demonstrate excellent verbal, written and communication skills
  • Must be comfortable with public speaking and presenting in front of a group
  • Ability to read, interpret and apply regulations from multiple entities
  • Basic understanding of Microsoft applications
  • Work with minimal supervision and accomplish tasks as assigned

  • The work is classified as “heavy” with regards to the physical demands at times
  • Lifting/carrying requirements may be up to 50 pounds occasionally
  • Climbing could include stairs and ladders
  • Full range of motion may be required to perform the essential functions of this position
  • Standing and walking could be 50 of the day. Concrete floors in the warehouse and paved ramp. Surfaces may be wet and icy seasonally.
  • Pushing/Pulling up to 100 pounds; may be required to load and offload cargo.
  • Good vision is required to perform all tasks.
  • Good hearing is necessary for effective and safe communication with colleagues.

Additional Requirements:

  • Valid drivers license required
  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Must be able to pass 5-year background check, 10-year criminal history check and security threat assessment
