The Production Materials Planner is responsible for managing the flow of materials to ensure that the production process is supported with the appropriate quantity and quality of raw materials, components, and supplies. This role involves coordinating with suppliers, production teams, and inventory management to ensure materials are available to meet production schedules while optimizing inventory levels, minimizing waste, and reducing costs.
Duties and Responsibilities/Essential Functions

- Analyze production schedules, sales forecasts, and inventory levels to determine material requirements for production.
- Create and maintain material planning records, including bills of materials (BOM), lead times, and reorder points.
- Monitor supplier performance and address issues related to quality, delivery delays, or discrepancies.
- Monitor and manage inventory levels to avoid both shortages and overstock situations.
- Coordinate the periodic physical inventory counts and ensure accuracy between actual stock and system records.
- Collaborate with the production team to align material availability with production schedules and timelines.
- Work with other departments such as engineering, quality control, and logistics to resolve any material or production issues.
- Respond quickly to changes in production schedules or unplanned downtime to ensure material availability.
- Track supplier performance regarding lead times, cost, and quality, and work to resolve any issues that arise.
- Assist in evaluating and selecting new suppliers or alternative materials when necessary.
- Monitor material usage and report on trends to identify potential issues with supply or inventory.
- Prepare and present regular reports on material availability, inventory levels, and production progress.
- Use ERP systems or other software to generate and analyze data related to material planning and inventory.
- Identify areas for improvement in the materials planning process, inventory management, or supplier relations.
- Recommend and help implement process changes that increase efficiency and reduce costs.
- Participate in cross-functional meetings to ensure alignment on material needs, production schedules, and overall goals.
Qualifications

- Bachelors degree in Supply Chain Management, Logistics, Business Administration, or a related field.
- Equivalent work experience may be considered in lieu of degree.
- ASCM (Certified in Production and Inventory Management - CPIM) or equivalent certification.
- Other continued education can be used in lieu of the ASCM certification.
- Minimum of 5-7 years of experience in production planning, materials management, or supply chain roles.
- Proven experience working with ERP/MRP systems.
- Experience in manufacturing or a related industry is highly desirable.
- Experience with Lean Manufacturing or Six Sigma methodologies preferred
- Knowledge of advanced planning and scheduling techniques (APS, JIT, etc.)
- Familiarity with global supply chains and internation sourcing preferred
