Position Summary

To perform a process control function and test brake materials used in MABS at various stages of brake materials manufacture. Working as part of a Laboratory based team to ensure material is produced effectively and meets MABS material specifications. To provide technical control for the processing of materials. Perform tests and collate and record results.

Responsibilities

Specific Accountabilities

  • Perform a process control function and test brake materials used in MABS at various stages of brake materials manufacture.
  • Working as part of a Laboratory based team to ensure material is produced effectively and meets MABS material specifications.
  • Select samples, test and approve brake materials (incoming, in-process, finished); examining mechanical and physical properties.
  • Prepare and issue furnace run instructions and load plans, and amend them as required.
  • Ensure all carbon processes (i.e. fabric manufacture, carbonizing, furnace runs) conform to run instructions and process specifications.
  • Monitor and calibrate gas monitoring equipment to ensure safe working conditions.
  • Providing technical control cover for Carbon and Ceramic friction materials and related processes.
  • Working mainly to established techniques and procedures.
  • Test and approve incoming raw material in process and finished brake materials and release for aircraft use.
  • Maintain the record system detailing results of control tests and production conditions. 
  • Examine, assess and approve outside manufactured parts.
  • Determine conditions for running of production vacuum furnace. 
  • Responsibility for determining if raw materials and in-process components conform to specifications.
  • Use laboratory analytical and test equipment, and laboratory and production presses; some use of heavy die sets. Collate results and report as appropriate.
  • Maintain good relationships in contacts with colleagues, production supervision and other departments; and occasional contacts with suppliers or test facilities.
  • Preserve confidentiality of company material and process specifications for formulations of friction materials.
  • Carry out development projects, under appropriate supervision.
  • Carry out special duties and development as assigned.

Qualifications

Technical Requirements

  • City & Guilds Chemical or Metallurgical certificates preferred, or equivalent.
  • Good basic education to GCSE level minimum, NC/HNC preferred, or equivalent.
  • Experience of working in a chemical or metallurgical laboratory environment. Advanced Materials Laboratory experience essential.
  • Experience relevant to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Over 2 years laboratory experience preferred, general laboratory training desirable. 
  • Knowledge of friction material manufacturing processes desirable.
  • Good planning, organizational, analytical, leadership, interpersonal, decision-making, problem-solving, oral and written communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of PC’s in the current company operating system environment.
  • Physical effort is required handling brake discs and jigs.
  • Working conditions and Hazards: Potentially hazardous environment. Specific details are contained in the area Risk Assessment, Furnace Instructions, and COSHH Assessment; all of which are available in the cell. Safety equipment must be worn. A pre-employment medical and annual health surveillance checks are required.
